EPSILON, a dynamic engineering consulting firm with deep expertise in environmental science and sustainability management, serves as a crucial catalyst in the ESY project to drive eco-friendly shipbuilding and material circularity. By bridging advanced technological frameworks with practical shipyard applications, EPSILON conducts comprehensive Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and actively contributes to the Material Circularity Index, ensuring full traceability and closed-loop material reuse. Furthermore, it has assumed the creation of the Shipyard Environmental Performance Index (SEPI) to rigorously measure and mitigate the ecological footprint of shipyard operations. To foster collaborative innovation and strategic knowledge transfer, EPSILON proudly leads, among others, the establishment of the ESY Living Lab and the exploitation plan, ensuring that the project’s ambitious eco-design goals are translated into actionable, zero-waste outcomes that can be scaled across the broader European maritime industry.

Meet the Experts Driving EcoShipYard (ESY) Forward

  • Markos Bonazountas – CEO: Provides strategic oversight and high-level project steering. Overview of EPSILON’s entire work. Facilitation of events and key partnerships for the exploitation strategy.
  • Jason Markatos – Researcher: Leading the creation of the LCA for shipbuilding materials across all project use cases (WP2), establishing the environmental baseline for marine components. Driving the architectural creation of the SEPI index (WP3) and overseeing its critical alignment and calibration for the specific use-cases of the pilot shipyards (WP5), ensuring data flows seamlessly from material procurement to daily yard operations.
  • Dimitris Polyzogopoulos – Researcher: Contribution to the development of the SEPI calculation by collecting and reviewing emission calculation formulas from relevant literature. Creation of a Python-based emission calculation tool and an Excel-based Decision Support System (DSS) tool for the calculation of the SEPI Index.
  • Nikos Xyderis – Researcher: Contributes to the ESY Event Organising Committee and supports the co-organisation of key project events, including the final ESY conference with the University of Strathclyde. Contribution to the development of the exploitation plan, supporting the uptake and future use of the project’s outcomes.
  • Lia Makri – Executive Administrator: Co-organization of events and establishment of partnerships.

How EPSILON is Powering ESY’s Success

  • [Comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)] – EPSILON is establishing a rigorous, layered Life Cycle Assessment framework for shipbuilding materials across all project use cases. This primary technical contribution allows for the precise, science-based quantification of environmental impacts.
  • [Shipyard Environmental Performance Index (SEPI)] – Building upon environmental data, EPSILON leads the creation and alignment of the SEPI for the project’s pilot use cases. This innovative index acts as a core technical tool, empowering shipyards to rigorously measure, monitor and mitigate the ecological footprint of their daily operations, enabling data-driven, eco-friendly decision-making at the yard level.
  • [ESY Living Lab Leadership] – As a key collaborative contribution, EPSILON is spearheading the ESY Living Lab. We are creating an open, user-centric innovation environment where shipyards, technology providers, and public stakeholders can collaboratively test, validate and refine sustainable shipbuilding solutions in real-world scenarios. Co- organizers in events such as Posidonia 2026 and the final event at the University of Strathclyde.
  • [Exploitation and Strategic Knowledge Transfer] – EPSILON leads the project’s exploitation plan. We manage the strategic dissemination of ESY’s findings and methodologies, ensuring that the consortium’s innovations are primed for market introduction, standard-setting, and widespread adoption across the European maritime industry.
