ESY Living Lab Cluster

The ESY Living Lab Cluster (ESY-LLC) aims to create a leading European lighthouse for sustainable & circular shipyard innovation, enabling shipyards to achieve high environmental performance and economic viability in line with the EU Green Deal and Fit for 55 targets.

The ESY-LLC will function as a collaborative hub, providing a physical and virtual environment where shipyards, technology providers, policymakers, and researchers co-create, test, validate, and upscale innovative technologies, processes, and business models that enhance environmental performance, promote circularity in shipbuilding, & strengthen the long-term economic viability of EU shipyards.

Living Lab SMART objectives:

1. Long-term operation and governance

  • By 2030, ensure the continuous operation of the ESY-LLC as a recognised EU
lighthouse for sustainable shipyards, with an established governance model and annual
workplan to follow technological & policy developments beyond the ESY project.
  • Review and update the ESY-LLC’s roadmap at least once per year to align with evolving
EU Green Deal, Fit for 55, and circular economy policies.

2. Stakeholder engagement and ecosystem building

  • Identify and actively engage at least 30 key stakeholders (shipyards, technology providers, policymakers, researchers, potential spin‐offs) in co-creation activities, joint pilots, or advisory roles.
  • Organise multi-stakeholder workshops annually to foster dialogue, partnerships, and joint initiatives on sustainable shipyard innovation.

3. Co-creation, testing, and validation of solutions

  • Within the project duration, co-create, test, and validate at least five innovative solutions
(technologies, processes, or business models) that measurably improve shipyard environmental performance (e.g. reduced emissions, waste, or resource use) and/or economic viability.
  • For each validated solution, document performance metrics and business cases in
standardised briefs and make them accessible to at least 10 external shipyards or
    stakeholders.

4. Monitoring, evaluation, and impact measurement

  • By the middle of the project, design and implement a monitoring and evaluation framework covering environmental, economic, & circularity indicators for all ESY-LLC pilots.
  • Produce annual assessment reports demonstrating progress toward EU Green Deal & Fit for 55 objectives (e.g. reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, increased material circularity) for participating shipyards.

5. Knowledge dissemination and replication

  • Throughout the project, share ESY-LLC results through at least four public
knowledge products per year (e.g. guidelines, policy briefs, technical reports,
webinars) targeting EU shipyards and policymakers.
  • By 2030, support replication of at least three ESY-LLC-tested solutions or
approaches in other EU shipyards or maritime clusters, contributing directly to EU
    circular economy and climate targets.
