On 24 September 2025, the CirclesOfLife (COL), EcoShipYard (ESY), and Green Marine Europe (GME) projects jointly hosted the Green Shipping Industry Day in Brussels. The event brought together policymakers, industry innovators, and maritime stakeholders to explore pathways toward a circular, transparent, and decarbonised future for European shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing.
The conference highlighted key innovations from the COL and ESY initiatives, supported by Horizon Europe, including:
- Material Passports and Circular Assessment Tools – enabling traceability of materials and environmental impacts across the full ship lifecycle, from design to dismantling.
- Shipyard Environmental Performance Index (SEPI) – a standardized benchmarking tool designed to support greener shipyard practices, promote adoption of cleaner technologies, and facilitate access to green finance.
These solutions are fully aligned with EU frameworks such as the Corporate Sustainable Reporting Directive (CSRD), Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), Digital Product Passport (DPP), and the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (SRR). By embedding transparency and circularity principles, the projects reinforce Europe’s competitiveness and industrial sovereignty in the maritime sector.
The event concluded with a strong call to action for policymakers and industry, underscoring the need for robust legal frameworks, financial mechanisms for circular practices, and integration of these tools within the EU Maritime Industrial Strategy.
