Valletta, Malta – May 7–9, 2025
Epsilon Malta Ltd. proudly presented the ESY Project at the University of Malta Maritime Platform Conference, held under the theme Innovations in Marine & Maritime Sustainable Developments: Research and Applications. The presentation, titled “LCA for Shipyard Digitalization Decarbonization”, was delivered by Jason Markatos, R&I Associate, and Marc Bonazountas, Director of Epsilon Malta Ltd.
As part of the ECOSHIPYARD initiative, the ESY Project aims to redefine sustainability in shipbuilding by leveraging advanced Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies to support digitalization and decarbonization across European shipyards. The conference brought together stakeholders from across 12 countries, representing a dynamic consortium committed to fostering greener maritime practices.
The presentation showcased a comprehensive environmental modeling framework for both steel and composite shipyards, utilizing tools such as SimaPro, Ecoinvent datasets, and custom-built emissions calculators. Key innovations included the development of a Shipyard Environmental Performance Index (SEPI) and a digital decision support system, enabling the quantification of emissions, waste, and energy use with unprecedented accuracy.
Highlights of the ESY Project’s contribution included:
- Simulation of real shipyard operations (Astander, DANAOS, Azimut Benetti)
- Composite and steel shipbuilding impact analysis
- Integration of environmental and operational KPIs
- Monte Carlo-based uncertainty and sensitivity analyses
- Roadmap for aligning shipyard processes with EU Green Deal and “Fit for 55” directives
The ESY Project continues to strengthen its role as a frontrunner in marine sustainability, offering strategic insights and scalable solutions to minimize the environmental footprint of shipbuilding.
